Lilly to Invest $5 Billion in New Virginia Manufacturing Facility

  • Lilly will invest $5 billion to build a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Virginia.
  • The site will create more than 650 permanent jobs and 1,800 construction roles over the next five years.

Lilly has announced plans to invest $5 billion to establish a new manufacturing facility west of Richmond, Virginia. The site will be the company’s first dedicated, fully integrated active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and drug product facility for its bioconjugate platform and monoclonal antibody portfolio.

The company stated that the investment will expand domestic drug production and help avoid potential tariffs. Earlier this year, Lilly revealed plans to build four new pharmaceutical manufacturing sites in the United States, with the Virginia facility being the first to be confirmed. The project is part of the company’s $50 billion U.S. capital expansion commitments since 2020.

The new facility is expected to be completed within the next five years. It will create more than 650 high-paying jobs, including roles for engineers, scientists, operations personnel and lab technicians. In addition, the project will generate around 1,800 construction jobs.

David A. Ricks, Lilly chair and CEO, said: “Our investment in Virginia underscores our commitment to U.S. innovation and manufacturing – creating high-quality jobs, strengthening communities and advancing the health and well-being of Americans nationwide.”

Lilly confirmed it will also expand domestic manufacturing of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) at the Virginia site. The company plans to announce the three remaining U.S. manufacturing sites this year and expects medicines to be produced across the four new facilities within five years.
