ICON Opens 69,500 sq ft Early Phase CRU in San Antonio Alongside New Satellite Outpatient Clinics

COMPANY PROFILE
  • ICON plc (NASDAQ: ICLR) has opened a new 69,500 sq ft Clinical Research Unit (CRU) in San Antonio, Texas, alongside two new satellite outpatient clinics in Houston, Texas and Lawrence, Kansas, significantly expanding its U.S. early phase CRO capacity for first-in-human, healthy participant, and patient cohort studies.
  • The San Antonio CRU co-locates clinic, pharmacy, laboratory, and investigational product handling under one roof, with GMP/GCP-compliant pharmacy space, ISO cleanrooms, a clinical safety laboratory, and sample processing and shipping facilities designed to accelerate dosing, protocol changes, and data delivery to sponsors.

ICON plc (NASDAQ: ICLR), a world-leading CRO, has announced the opening of a new, purpose-built Clinical Research Unit in San Antonio, Texas, along with satellite outpatient clinics in Houston, Texas and Lawrence, Kansas. Announced on May 13, 2026, the expansion significantly increases ICON’s U.S. capacity to conduct first-in-human, healthy participant, and patient cohort studies across its early phase development platform.

The 69,500 sq ft San Antonio CRU is built around a fully integrated infrastructure model. By co-locating the clinic, pharmacy, laboratory, and investigational product handling within a single facility, ICON removes the inter-site logistics that typically create delays between dosing decisions and data delivery. On-site capabilities include a GMP/GCP-compliant pharmacy and manufacturing space with ISO cleanrooms, a clinical safety laboratory, and sample processing and shipping facilities. The facility also includes private and semi-private dormitories, recreation areas, and dedicated clinical spaces, with advanced safety systems for continuous participant monitoring and rapid clinical response.

The two satellite outpatient clinics in Houston and Lawrence are designed to complement the San Antonio CRU by extending recruitment reach for ICON’s existing Phase I units in the region and providing greater operational flexibility for studies requiring extended Phase I follow-up. By situating outpatient services closer to participant populations, the model reduces travel burden and supports study retention — two factors that directly affect recruitment timelines and data quality for sponsors.

The new San Antonio CRU joins ICON’s global network of dedicated Phase I research units in Salt Lake City, Utah; Lenexa, Kansas; Groningen, Netherlands; and Budapest, Hungary. The expansion reflects continued CRO investment in early phase infrastructure at a time when sponsor demand for first-in-human and early patient study capacity — particularly in the U.S. — continues to grow alongside an increasingly complex pipeline of novel modalities.

“We are proud to open this state-of-the-art facility in San Antonio and look forward to contributing to the San Antonio life sciences community and to its continued growth as a hub for innovation.”

Ute Berger, Chief Medical Officer and President of Development Solutions, ICON plc
