Evonik Restructures Units, Targets Lipids and Adhesive Resins

  • Evonik to discontinue keto acid production in Hanau by 2025. The company will explore partnerships or divestment for its keto and pharma amino acid sites in Ham and Wuming.

Evonik has announced plans to reorganise its Health Care business to focus on core growth areas such as complex active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), drug delivery systems, and biosolutions like lipids for mRNA and gene therapies. As part of this transformation, the company will discontinue its production of keto acids at its Hanau facility by the end of 2025, impacting approximately 260 employees. The affected employees will receive support in finding alternative employment, either within or outside the company.

In addition to this change, Evonik will evaluate strategic options, including partnerships or divestments, for its keto and pharma amino acid production sites in Ham (France) and Wuming (China). These businesses generate approximately €100 million in annual revenue and serve various industries, including medical nutrition, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical intermediates.

Thomas Wessel, Chief Human Resources Officer at Evonik, emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting affected employees. “Social responsibility is in our core. We will support all the affected colleagues and try to find the best solution for each person,” he said.

The reorganization is part of Evonik’s broader strategy to align resources with high-growth areas within the life sciences sector. Yann d’Hervé, Head of the Health Care business line, stated that the restructuring would enable the company to better serve its customers and accelerate innovation. “Our Health Care business will now be able to focus all energy and resources on future technologies to better serve our customers and accelerate growth,”  Yann d’Hervé said.
