AstraZeneca has opened a new global strategic research and development (R&D) center in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The 570,000-square-foot facility is intended to bring together nearly 2,000 researchers and scientists and advance the company’s pipeline across oncology, cell therapy, chronic disease and rare disease.
The 18-story AstraZeneca R&D Center Kendall Square at 290 Binney Street includes 10 floors of interconnected laboratories. The facility incorporates robotics, continuous automation and agentic artificial intelligence technologies to support research and collaboration. Scientists at the site will work on treatments for conditions including COPD, obesity and metabolic disease, breast cancer and rare diseases, while also focusing on areas such as cell therapy and biologics.
The new center builds on AstraZeneca’s existing presence in Cambridge and Boston and complements its genomic medicine site at 100 Binney Street. The company said the facility was built using sustainable design standards and is intended to support collaboration across its research activities.
The opening is part of AstraZeneca’s broader investment in the United States. The company said it is investing $50 billion across the country, including more than $1 billion in Massachusetts. That investment is expected to expand AstraZeneca’s Massachusetts workforce by more than 50% in the coming years and contribute additional economic value and jobs across the state.
The Kendall Square center adds to AstraZeneca’s R&D presence in more than 40 countries and its U.S. footprint of 24 R&D, manufacturing, commercial and corporate sites. The company said its U.S. workforce exceeds 25,000 people and supports nearly 100,000 jobs across the country.
