Gilead Sciences, Inc. has opened its 182,000-square-foot Research Center at its headquarters in Foster City, California, expanding the company’s research capabilities in oncology, inflammation and research data science. The five-story facility is designed to support approximately 325 employees, including 260 laboratory scientists.
The Research Center is part of Gilead’s broader $32 billion investment in U.S. research, development and manufacturing through 2030. The company said the facility is intended to bring together research disciplines and data science capabilities to support the discovery and development of medicines for challenging diseases. Gilead employs approximately 11,000 people across the United States, including more than 7,400 in California and nearly 4,700 in the Bay Area.
The facility includes flexible laboratory neighborhoods, collaboration spaces and shared technology platforms. A dedicated bridge connects the Research Center with an adjacent building to facilitate the transfer of equipment and research materials. The facility also includes the Research Quad, a central space for collaboration and scientific exchange.
The Foster City Research Center is one of three major projects supporting Gilead’s U.S. investment through 2030. The Technical Development Center is expected to open in 2027, while a biologics facility that broke ground in August is expected to open in 2029. The new Research Center uses all-electric systems, energy-efficient design and water-saving landscaping with California native plants, with the facility expected to support LEED Gold certification.
“Our new Research Center will help Gilead scientists make the most of that opportunity, delivering more breakthrough medicines faster.”
Daniel O’Day, Chairman and CEO of Gilead Sciences
The company said the center reflects its continued investment in U.S. research and development and its focus on expanding scientific capabilities.
