Momentum Biotechnologies Launches CHIPP Assay for Proteome-Wide, High-Throughput Drug Target Deconvolution

COMPANY PROFILE
  • Momentum Biotechnologies, a mass spectrometry-based drug discovery CRO with laboratories in Billerica, Massachusetts and Freising, Germany, has launched CHIPP (chaotrope-induced protein precipitation and proteome profiling), a novel label-free assay enabling automated, proteome-wide profiling of hundreds of drug compounds for target identification, deconvolution, and selectivity profiling.
  • CHIPP is designed to significantly increase both depth and throughput compared to existing label-free target deconvolution methods, allowing researchers to analyze hundreds of primary screening hits in 96-well-plate format — removing the need to pre-select a small number of candidates for follow-up profiling.

Momentum Biotechnologies, a contract research organization specializing in mass spectrometry-based drug discovery, has announced the launch of CHIPP — chaotrope-induced protein precipitation and proteome profiling — a sensitive, scalable, and label-free assay for the analysis of drug:target interactions. The technology, announced May 27, 2026, enables automated, proteome-wide profiling of hundreds of test compounds and represents a significant expansion of Momentum’s CRO service offering for biopharma sponsors engaged in early-stage drug discovery.

CHIPP addresses a longstanding throughput bottleneck in target deconvolution workflows. Conventional label-free methods require sponsors to select a limited number of compounds for follow-up target profiling after primary screening — a constraint that introduces risk by narrowing the field of candidates before target engagement is well understood. CHIPP resolves this by supporting 96-well-plate-format analysis of hundreds of primary screening hits in a single workflow, delivering proteome-wide data on target identification, target deconvolution, and selectivity profiling without the need for compound labeling or prior target knowledge.

For CRO clients, the operational implications are direct. Sponsors running high-throughput screening campaigns can now extend mass spectrometry-based target profiling across a substantially larger portion of their compound libraries, generating richer early-stage data sets to inform lead selection and reduce downstream attrition risk. Momentum’s existing portfolio of services — including high-throughput screening, bioanalysis, proteomics, and chemoproteomics — is now complemented by CHIPP as an integrated tool within its mass spectrometry-first drug discovery platform.

Momentum operates one of the largest high-throughput mass spectrometry laboratories in the world, with a core team that has worked together for over 20 years. The company’s dual-site presence in Massachusetts and Germany supports biopharma clients globally, with CHIPP available to international sponsors through both locations. Momentum will be presenting CHIPP alongside its broader service capabilities at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry conference in San Diego, California, from May 31 to June 4, 2026.

“CHIPP has the potential to transform drug discovery workflows — instead of having to select a few candidates for follow-up profiling, researchers can now analyze hundreds of primary screening hits in 96-well-plate format using CHIPP technology. We believe that this approach offers substantial benefit to our clients and will ultimately facilitate the discovery and development of novel therapeutics.”
