Global Biopharma Financing Hit a 4-Year High in Q4 2025, Fueled by $200bn in Pharma M&A

Global biopharma financing closed out 2025 on its strongest footing in years: Q4 was among the strongest quarters for financing in over four years, with more than $30 billion raised by biopharma companies worldwide, according to SwedenBIO’s Life Science Barometer 2026.

Large pharma spent more than $200 billion on M&A over the year to refill its pipeline, the most since 2019, pushing the NASDAQ Biotechnology Index to new all-time highs.

The Global Rebound

The recovery follows several lean years after the pandemic-era peak. Total M&A value climbed to $205 billion across 155 acquisitions in 2025, up from $82 billion in 2024, though deal volume has trended down from a peak of 220 acquisitions in 2020. Fewer, larger deals are increasingly the pattern: pharma is concentrating capital on higher-conviction bets rather than spreading it across a wider set of smaller acquisitions.

The Competitive Landscape

Capital availability is not spreading evenly across the global biotech map. Recent years have seen remarkable growth within biotech companies in China and South Korea, while Europe has held comparatively steady. As competition for capital grows more global, the bar for capturing investor attention keeps rising, meaning European and other non-US, non-China ecosystems increasingly compete for a share of the same pool of international investors.

Policy Tailwinds

New public funding schemes are emerging to help close that gap. The proposed €10 billion BioTechEU initiative is intended to provide further support for European biotechs seeking capital, though access to major investors in the US and broader Europe will continue to depend on strong underlying science and a compelling commercial pathway.
