FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies Expands Hillerød Site with New Production Capacity

  • FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies has completed the first phase of a capacity expansion at its Hillerød biomanufacturing site.
  • The project adds six 20,000 L bioreactors and is part of a broader plan to increase capacity by 2026.

FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies has completed the initial phase of its production capacity expansion at its Hillerød, Denmark site. This expansion adds six 20,000 L mammalian cell bioreactors, doubling the site’s capacity and bringing its total to 12 bioreactors, in a move aimed at meeting the rising global demand for biologics.

The company’s expansion plan at Hillerød is the first step in a strategy to establish a comprehensive, global manufacturing ecosystem dedicated to biologics. As part of this plan, FUJIFILM Diosynth will further increase the site’s capacity with an additional eight bioreactors and two downstream processing lines in subsequent phases, aiming for full completion by 2026. The project is expected to create up to 2,200 jobs and increase the facility’s size to approximately 51,500 square metres.

“Our operations in Hillerød represent our commitment to being the world-leading partner for life,” said Christian Houborg, site head and senior vice president of FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies. “This expansion is a testament to our vision for introducing robust capabilities into the global biopharma landscape, ensuring the timely delivery of critical therapies to those in need.”

This initiative aligns with FUJIFILM Diosynth’s larger commitment to global biologics production, having invested over $8 billion in its network since 2011. In addition to Hillerød, the company is expanding in the U.S., with a large-scale facility scheduled to begin operations in North Carolina by 2025.

The Hillerød facility expansion is also integrated into FUJIFILM Diosynth’s sustainability efforts. The site has signed a ten-year Power Purchase Agreement to run entirely on renewable energy, part of its Partners for the Planet initiative. This commitment to sustainable operations has earned the facility EcoVadis’ silver certification, reflecting its adherence to high environmental standards.
