APL Partners with CurifyLabs to Bring 3D-Printed Medicines to Sweden

  • APL and CurifyLabs collaborate to introduce 3D printing technology for personalised medicines in Sweden, targeting critically ill patients and children.
  • 3D-printed extemporaneous medicines are expected to be available in Sweden by 2025, with the first printers arriving in September 2024.

APL, a Swedish Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO), has announced a partnership with Finnish health tech firm CurifyLabs to develop 3D-printed medicines. The collaboration aims to enhance medicine administration for children and critically ill patients by using 3D printing technology for personalised dosages.

3D printing enables more tailored dosing compared to traditional pharmaceutical processes, offering flexible shapes and structures. This innovation will allow APL to produce exact doses, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. The technology is also expected to improve workplace safety by minimising exposure to hazardous substances and repetitive strain injuries for staff.

“We are very impressed with CurifyLabs’ commitment to supporting us on our journey to address the urgent unmet needs of critically ill patients,” said Erik Haeffler, CEO at APL. “3D printing is an exciting technology that will offer us additional opportunities to meet these needs.”

The first 3D printers are expected to be delivered to APL in September 2024, with full compliance and validation of the 3D-printed extemporaneous medicines planned by 2025. Charlotta Topelius, CEO at CurifyLabs, commented, “We are excited to combine our strengths with APL to accelerate our development efforts and create greater value for patients needing personalised medicines.”
