BeiGene’s U.S. Expansion: New Manufacturing Site Underway

  • BeiGene is establishing a new manufacturing and clinical R&D center in New Jersey, marking its first plant outside of China.
  • The new site will provide state-of-the-art commercial-stage U.S. biologic pharmaceutical manufacturing and late-stage research and clinical development capabilities.
  • The company expects to complete the construction of the first phase by mid-2023.

BeiGene, a biotechnology company, has embarked on a significant expansion with the construction of its first manufacturing and clinical R&D center outside of China. The new 42-acre site, located at the Princeton West Innovation Campus in Hopewell, New Jersey, is a strategic asset for BeiGene as it continues to build its global presence.

The new facility will provide state-of-the-art commercial-stage U.S. biologic pharmaceutical manufacturing, late-stage research, and clinical development capabilities. This move is particularly important for BeiGene as it continues to expand its global business through new approvals, including the FDA’s recent approval of BRUKINSA for adult patients with CLL in the U.S.

BeiGene’s CEO, John Oyler, highlighted the importance of having control over the manufacturing process, especially in biologics, for supply certainty to patients in all countries. He said, “I think it’s important to the world now, given the way supply chain issues occurred during COVID, that you have a number of geographies in which you’re manufacturing”.

The initial phase of the New Jersey project includes about 400,000 square feet of biologics manufacturing space and 16,000 liters of capacity. The entire property will contain more than one million square feet of developable real estate, allowing for potential future expansions. The company expects to wrap up construction of the first phase by mid-2023.
