Codis Begins Construction on PSD-4 Expansion to Increase Spray Drying Capacity

COMPANY PROFILE
  • Codis has completed demolition of redundant facilities and begun construction on its PSD-4 expansion at its Haverhill site in the U.K.
  • The new GEA Pharma-SD® type PSD-4 solvent-capable spray dryer is expected to provide additional commercial-scale spray drying capacity for amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Codis, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) specializing in spray drying, amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) and advanced particle engineering, has begun construction on its PSD-4 expansion at its Haverhill facility in the U.K. The project follows the completion of demolition work at the site and will add commercial-scale solvent-based spray drying capacity for pharmaceutical customers.

The expansion involves installing a GEA Pharma-SD® type PSD-4 solvent-capable spray dryer. Following installation and validation, the equipment will support the larger-scale manufacturing of ASDs, enabling pharmaceutical customers to advance poorly soluble drug candidates into commercial-scale production. The investment will use existing infrastructure at the Haverhill site.

The project will also connect with Codis’ existing capabilities in Nottingham, which include formulation development, analytical services, clinical supply and oral solid dose manufacturing. Together, these capabilities are intended to support pharmaceutical programs from early formulation development through to commercial-scale spray drying across the company’s U.K. network.

“Completing demolition and moving into construction is an important milestone for the PSD-4 expansion. By building within our existing Haverhill facility and utilizing established site infrastructure, we can deliver the additional capacity efficiently while building on the expertise and capabilities already in place in our 100,000 sq. ft. cGMP facility.”

Nick Hodgson, Vice President and General Manager of Haverhill Operations at Codis

The expansion remains on schedule, with the Dryer Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) planned for November 2026. The new spray drying capacity is expected to become available in the fourth quarter of 2027.
