Fresenius SE & Co. KGaA has entered an exclusive development agreement with WuXi Biologics to expand its biosimilars pipeline, gaining access to up to 37 identified candidates over the next decade. The agreement provides Fresenius with exclusive global commercialization rights, including marketing authorizations, and the full economics of each product commercialized under the arrangement. Development activities are expected to be conducted through WuXi Biologics’ global network.
The agreement provides a pathway for Fresenius to increase its portfolio from 29 marketed and pipeline molecules to up to 66. The expanded portfolio is expected to cover 13 therapeutic areas and address more than €370 billion in originator list-price-based sales. Fresenius will select and advance development programs based on market attractiveness, development risk and expected returns.
The planned portfolio will include monoclonal and bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and fusion proteins. It will expand into neurology, nephrology and cardiopulmonary while strengthening Fresenius’ existing positions in oncology, immunology and gastroenterology. Initial development is expected to focus on polatuzumab vedotin, an ADC for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and teprotumumab, a monoclonal antibody for thyroid eye disease.
“We are doubling down on our Biopharma business. With this agreement, we are gaining access to development capabilities in a market where speed and scale are of the essence. It provides a disciplined, scalable way to potentially triple our portfolio while retaining economic ownership, strategic control and the flexibility to allocate capital to the most compelling opportunities. Combined with the full ownership of mAbxience, this fuels our Biopharma growth well beyond 2030.”
Michael Sen, Chief Executive Officer of Fresenius
The agreement forms part of Fresenius’ broader pipeline expansion strategy, which combines internal research and development, targeted collaborations and selective in-licensing. It builds on the company’s acquisition of Spain-headquartered mAbxience and combines WuXi Biologics’ development capabilities with Fresenius’ global manufacturing and commercialization network. The collaboration is intended to expand Fresenius’ development opportunities while retaining control over the commercial economics of resulting products.
