Hovione has completed the expansion of its tablet development and manufacturing center at its global campus in Loures, Portugal, adding 25% more commercial-scale batch tableting capacity. The expansion completes an investment cycle of more than €40 million and is intended to support the integrated supply of oral solid dosage products.
The company added a second tableting line that mirrors the existing unit across dispensing, blending, dry granulation, tableting and film coating. The configuration reinforces capacity at the 300–400 kg batch scale and allows like-for-like product transfers between lines. Hovione also added supporting in-process control and staging areas.
The expanded facility strengthens Hovione’s ability to manufacture amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) using spray drying and convert them into finished oral dosage forms at a single site. Hovione said performing both steps under one quality system can shorten development timelines and simplify supply chains for customers that would otherwise transfer intermediates between sites or suppliers.
The investment follows Hovione’s 2022 addition of a continuous tablet manufacturing line at the same complex. The company said the latest expansion supports both established batch manufacturing and growing interest in continuous manufacturing. The investment also created 50 skilled jobs across production, engineering, quality, science and technology at the Sete Casas facility.
