Lonza Joins CMAC to Strengthen Drug Product Development Capabilities

  • Lonza has joined CMAC to enhance its capabilities in continuous manufacturing, crystallization, and drug product technologies.
  • The collaboration aims to improve Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control (CMC) processes in a CDMO setting.

Lonza, a global development and manufacturing partner for the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors, has joined CMAC to strengthen its service offering in particle technologies and drug product development. CMAC, based at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, is a medicines manufacturing research hub comprising both academic and industrial stakeholders.

The collaboration enables Lonza to access CMAC’s expertise in Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control (CMC) technologies, digitalisation strategies, and advanced continuous processing methods. By participating in CMAC’s network, Lonza aims to accelerate the implementation of these innovations across its global contract manufacturing operations.

CMAC focuses on developing continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing and crystallization processes, with the goal of improving efficiency and product quality. The partnership will support Lonza in applying research outcomes directly to its CMC workflows for the benefit of its customers.

Massimo Bresciani, CMAC Industry Director, stated that Lonza’s membership represents a major step in CMAC’s mission to modernise medicines manufacturing. He noted that Lonza’s global presence, technical expertise, and strategic approach will help advance the uptake of highly automated manufacturing systems and innovative CMC practices. According to Bresciani, the collaboration reinforces CMAC’s aim to foster a connected ecosystem where academic research and industrial application align to deliver impactful and scalable solutions for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

Francois Ricard, Head of R&D, Advanced Synthesis at Lonza, added: “Our participation in CMAC will allow us to work with world-leading industry and academia experts and apply best practice in the fields of API development, continuous processing, drug product development, and overall digital CMC strategy.”
