Matica Bio Adds Cirsium Biosciences to Open Access Platform for AAV Manufacturing

COMPANY PROFILE
  • Cirsium Biosciences has joined the Matica Open Access Platform, expanding its collaboration with Matica Bio to support AAV development and manufacturing.
  • The partnership combines Cirsium’s plant-based AAV production technology with Matica Bio’s downstream processing and analytical capabilities to improve manufacturing flexibility and scalability.

Matica Biotechnology, Inc. (Matica Bio) and Cirsium Biosciences have expanded their collaboration through Cirsium’s participation in the Matica Open Access Platform, a framework designed to support flexible and scalable adeno-associated virus (AAV) development and manufacturing. The companies said the arrangement integrates Cirsium’s plant-based AAV production technology with Matica Bio’s downstream processing and analytical expertise.

According to the companies, the Matica Open Access Platform is intended to provide a modular alternative to traditional CDMO engagement models by offering flexible manufacturing pathways, transparent process development and data access, and interoperability with multiple technologies and partners. The platform is designed to support development activities from early-stage programmes through commercial readiness.

Under the agreement, Cirsium will use the platform to support its decentralized manufacturing strategy, which combines internal plant-based upstream production with external downstream manufacturing partners. The companies said this approach is intended to increase manufacturing flexibility and support broader distribution capabilities.

Matica Bio stated that the collaboration builds on an existing relationship between the companies and is aimed at improving the efficiency and scalability of AAV manufacturing. The companies noted that manufacturing cost and complexity remain challenges for gene therapy development and that demand continues to grow for approaches that can reduce timelines and increase production capacity.

“Joining the Matica Open Access Platform is a natural extension of our mission and manufacturing model. We founded Cirsium on the belief that the future of gene therapy depends on making production more scalable and accessible.”
