Terumo Corporation has announced the global commercial launch of its K-Pack Embrace active safety needle, a safety injection needle designed for automated co-packing processes. The needle is packaged in a rigid cap and case container intended to facilitate downstream co-packing and protect the needle through the product life cycle until use.

The K-Pack Embrace features a compact hard-shell case designed for automated co-packing, where needles require protection during handling while maintaining sterility and performance over the intended shelf life. The needle is intended for subcutaneous, intramuscular and intravenous applications and incorporates Terumo’s T-Sharp technology with integrated needle shield safety features.

The 25-gauge needle is available in 1-inch (25 mm) and 5/8-inch (16 mm) lengths and is compatible with ISO 80369-7 male connectors. Its color-coded, tamper-evident label includes a 2D barcode, or UDI carrier, to support automated in-line visual inspection. An integrated hinged needle shield can be activated with one hand and provides audible, visual and tactile confirmation of engagement.

Terumo said the product is designed to support automated co-packing of pre-selected injection needles with drug products and syringes. The company said this approach can reduce risks to patients, provide convenience for healthcare professionals and maintain the value proposition of injectable products for pharmaceutical companies.

“The K-Pack Embrace™ active safety needle is a great example of applying our Deviceutical™ approach that brings devices and pharmaceuticals together for uniquely integrated injectable drug delivery solutions.”
