- Onyx Scientific is investing more than £1.5 million to expand its GMP facilities and increase commercial API production capacity at its Sunderland, UK facility.
- The expansion will add four GMP suites, taking the total from six to 10, with the new capacity expected to come online in Q1 2027.
Onyx Scientific, a small molecule CDMO, is investing more than £1.5 million to expand its GMP facilities and increase capacity for commercial active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production at its Sunderland, UK facility. The expansion will add four GMP suites, increasing the total from six to 10 and providing additional capacity for commercial production and early-phase GMP programs.
The investment also includes new infrastructure and equipment. Onyx said the additional suites will provide greater flexibility for production scheduling, allowing commercial campaigns and time-sensitive early-phase GMP programs to be accommodated alongside one another. The new capacity is expected to become operational in Q1 2027.
The expansion will initially create nine new jobs across production chemistry, analytical, and quality assurance functions, representing an overall workforce increase of approximately 8%. Onyx said it plans to increase its headcount further in the near future. The company’s UK and US facilities provide CMC capabilities spanning process R&D, solid-state chemistry, analytical development, Phase I-III GMP manufacturing, and commercial API supply.
“This investment marks a significant commitment to our clients, enabling us to grow production to meet increased demand across our early-phase and commercial pipelines. The company said the expansion forms part of its longer-term investment in its CMC platform and reinforces its commitment to Sunderland and the wider North East.”

Onyx said work on the development began in August. The company’s expanded facility is intended to provide additional flexibility as drug development programs progress and production requirements change. The investment is part of Onyx’s 26-year history of investment in innovation, technology, and skills.
