Piramal Pharma Limited has taken a significant step towards its sustainability goals with the conversion of its coal-fired steam boiler to biomass briquettes at its Digwal, India facility. This change is expected to eliminate approximately 24,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions annually, representing around 17% of the company’s total emissions.
This strategic move aligns with Piramal Pharma’s broader environmental objectives, which include reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% by 2030. Biomass briquettes, made from compressed agricultural waste, are a renewable energy source that supports the principles of a circular economy.
Nandini Piramal, Chairperson of Piramal Pharma, commented on the achievement, stating, “The transition to biomass briquettes at our Digwal facility is a testament to our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint while driving innovation in sustainable manufacturing.”
The use of biomass briquettes is a major advancement in the company’s sustainability efforts. By adopting this renewable fuel, Piramal Pharma reduces waste and promotes eco-friendly practices in line with global climate action frameworks.
Peter DeYoung, CEO of Piramal Global Pharma, also highlighted the importance of this transition, noting, “This transformation at our Digwal facility underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable operational practices.”
The company’s commitment to responsible growth is evident in this shift towards renewable energy. As the pharmaceutical industry increasingly embraces climate action, Piramal Pharma remains dedicated to enhancing operational excellence while contributing to a greener future.
