ChromaTan and Landmark Bio Secure NIIMBL Grant for AAV Manufacturing Innovation

  • ChromaTan Inc. and Landmark Bio PBLLC have received a grant from NIIMBL to develop an intensified AAV production process.
  • The project will leverage ChromaTan’s BioRMB technology and Landmark Bio’s expertise in viral vector manufacturing to improve efficiency and scalability.

ChromaTan Inc. and Landmark Bio PBLLC have been awarded a grant from the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) to advance recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) production. The funding supports NIIMBL’s Viral Vector Manufacturing and Analytics Program, aiming to enhance biopharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities.

The collaboration will focus on developing a scalable and cost-effective platform for manufacturing AAV-based gene therapy vectors. ChromaTan’s BioRMB technology and Kascade instrumentation will be integrated with Landmark Bio’s expertise in viral vector process development, chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC), and GMP manufacturing. The goal is to improve purification efficiency and intensify the production process.

“We are excited to collaborate with Landmark Bio, showcasing their capabilities together with ChromaTan’s BioRMB as a next-generation purification platform for gene therapy products,” said Oleg Shinkazh, CEO of ChromaTan. He highlighted that the project will facilitate the evaluation of multiple AAV serotypes and key process variables while sharing insights with NIIMBL’s broader community.

Gregg Nyberg, Ph.D., CTO of Landmark Bio, emphasised the potential of continuous chromatography to lower resin costs, enhance step recoveries, and increase production capacity, ultimately making gene therapies more accessible.

NIIMBL, a public-private partnership under Manufacturing USA, aims to accelerate innovation in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and workforce development. This initiative aligns with its mission to strengthen U.S. manufacturing capabilities and advance emerging biopharmaceutical products.
