CordenPharma Submits Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets to SBTi

  • CordenPharma has submitted its greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets to the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) for validation.

CordenPharma, a global pharmaceutical service provider, has taken a decisive step toward sustainability by submitting its near-term GHG emission reduction targets to the SBTi in November 2024. This milestone follows its 2022 pledge to join the initiative and reflects a comprehensive strategy to address climate challenges across its global network.

To determine its climate objectives, the company calculated its 2023 carbon footprint using the GHG protocol methodology. This system categorises emissions into three scopes, based on whether they stem from direct operations or from external value chain partners. The findings were transparently disclosed through the CDP, an environmental reporting system widely used by stakeholders for decision-making.

Key steps in CordenPharma’s decarbonisation strategy include installing photovoltaic systems at its Lisbon and Fribourg facilities, adopting biogas at its Liestal site, and investing in offsite solar power for its Colorado operations. These measures align with the company’s ambition to lead on climate action while fostering partnerships with customers to achieve shared environmental goals.

Dr. Michael Quirmbach, President & CEO of CordenPharma, commented: “Taking more pro-active carbon emission reduction actions enhances our competitiveness in the transition to a low-carbon economy and the collaboration with customers in achieving their climate change goals.”

Since being acquired by Astorg in 2022, CordenPharma has collaborated closely with the private equity firm’s ESG team to accelerate its sustainability initiatives. Viviana Occhionorelli, Partner, ESG at Astorg, endorsed the company’s progress, stating: “The submission of their near-term GHG emission reduction targets to the SBTi demonstrates strong commitment in line with our ambition to lead on climate action.”
