FUJIFILM Biotechnologies Donates $100,000 Bioreactor Controller to NC State BTEC

COMPANY PROFILE
  • FUJIFILM Biotechnologies has donated a $100,000 bioreactor controller to NC State University’s Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC).
  • The investment will support workforce training as the company prepares for the expansion of its Holly Springs commercial-scale manufacturing site.

FUJIFILM Biotechnologies, a contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) for biologics, vaccines, and advanced therapies, has provided a $100,000 in-kind donation to North Carolina State University’s Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC). The contribution, made in partnership with the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, funds a state-of-the-art bioreactor controller for hands-on workforce training.

The new bioreactor controller automatically monitors and adjusts conditions such as oxygen, pH, stirring speed, and nutrient feeds, supporting live cell growth during therapy manufacturing. It can operate in batch, fed-batch, or perfusion mode. Around 100 students and professionals are expected to benefit each year from BTEC’s cell culture courses using the new equipment.

“As a major employer in the Triangle, we recognize the importance of investing in our community’s future, ensuring that we have a well-trained and readily available workforce capable of supporting us in making complex, powerful, and life-changing medicines.”

Laurie Braxton, senior vice president, head of North Carolina operations, FUJIFILM Biotechnologies.

The donation aligns with the company’s workforce needs as it advances the second-phase expansion of its commercial-scale manufacturing facility in Holly Springs. The site, due to open its first phase this autumn, is expected to employ 1,400 people by 2031.

This initiative builds on FUJIFILM Biotechnologies’ ongoing collaboration with NC State, which includes projects in sustainable facility design, bioprocessing innovation, and talent pipeline development.
