McKesson Acquires Global CRO Precision Medicine Group for $2.25B to Deepen Oncology Clinical Research Capabilities

COMPANY PROFILE
  • McKesson Corporation (NYSE: MCK), the Irving, Texas-based healthcare services and distribution company ranked eighth on the Fortune 500, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Precision Medicine Group, LLC — a Bethesda, Maryland-based global provider of clinical research and biopharma commercialization services including a CRO, biomarker intelligence, lab services, market access consulting, and commercialization support — for approximately $2.25 billion.
  • The acquisition places Precision Medicine Group within McKesson’s Oncology & Multispecialty segment — where revenue grew 33% to $14.2 billion in Q1 fiscal 2026 — and marks the largest CRO-relevant transaction of the year, extending McKesson’s integrated oncology platform from healthcare distribution and provider services into clinical trial execution and biopharma development support.

McKesson Corporation (NYSE: MCK) announced on August 25, 2026, from Irving, Texas, that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Precision Medicine Group, LLC, a global provider of clinical research and biopharma commercialization services, for approximately $2.25 billion. Upon closing — subject to customary regulatory clearances — Precision Medicine Group will become part of McKesson’s Oncology & Multispecialty segment, integrating clinical trial execution, biomarker intelligence, lab services, market access consulting, and commercialization support into one of the strongest-performing divisions in the McKesson portfolio.

Precision Medicine Group, founded in 2012 and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, offers a suite of integrated services and technology-enabled products for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies across the drug development and commercialization lifecycle. Its capabilities span biomarker intelligence and identification, lab services from five facilities across the U.S. and Europe, global CRO clinical trial services with particular concentration in oncology, complex trial design, market access strategy, and commercialization support — providing biopharma companies with a connected service model from development through commercial launch. The company’s CRO capabilities in complex oncology trial design and execution are directly complementary to the clinical trial infrastructure that McKesson’s Oncology & Multispecialty segment has been building through prior investments.

The transaction is the largest CRO-relevant deal of 2026 and reflects a broader strategic reconfiguration at McKesson that has been underway since the company unveiled a new segment structure in September 2025, reorganizing around high-margin growth businesses including oncology and specialty care. McKesson’s Oncology & Multispecialty segment posted a 33% revenue increase to $14.2 billion and a 41% increase in adjusted operating profit in Q1 fiscal 2026, driven by specialty distribution growth and expanded provider services. The Precision Medicine Group acquisition adds the clinical development and commercialization layer to a segment that already serves community oncology practices, specialty pharmacies, and health systems — creating a more integrated end-to-end oncology services platform for biopharma clients. The acquisition follows McKesson’s April 2026 agreement to sell a minority stake in its medical-surgical solutions business to Apollo Funds for $1.25 billion ahead of a planned IPO — a capital recycling strategy designed to fund exactly this type of high-growth oncology investment.

For biopharma sponsors, the strategic implication of the deal is significant. McKesson’s distribution network, provider relationships, and oncology practice infrastructure give Precision Medicine Group access to a clinical and commercial ecosystem that standalone CROs cannot replicate. The ability to connect clinical trial design and execution with real-world oncology practice data, specialty pharmacy dispensing infrastructure, and commercialization support in a single corporate structure represents a differentiated value proposition in the oncology drug development outsourcing market. JP Morgan analyst Lisa Gill characterized the acquisition as likely to strengthen McKesson’s biopharma offerings — reflecting broader investor expectation that the integration will create cross-selling and service enhancement opportunities across McKesson’s existing biopharma and provider client base.

“Precision Medicine Group brings complementary capabilities that will enhance our clinical research and commercialization services, strengthen clinical trial execution, and broaden our clinical service offerings. This acquisition represents another meaningful step in advancing our oncology and multispecialty strategy and reflects our continued commitment to providing patients with access to the highest quality of care.”
