Boehringer Ingelheim Inaugurates Biomass Power Plant, Cuts CO2 Emissions by 70%

  • Boehringer Ingelheim inaugurates biomass power plant, reducing CO2 emissions by 70%.
  • The EUR 205 million investment aims for 95% renewable energy coverage at the Ingelheim site.

Boehringer Ingelheim inaugurated a new biomass power plant at its Ingelheim site. The facility marks a substantial step in optimising the company’s energy supply and enhancing its environmental sustainability. The biomass plant is projected to save around 50,000 tons of CO2 annually, reducing the site’s energy generation CO2 emissions by 70%.

The company has invested EUR 205 million in sustainable infrastructure projects at Ingelheim. This investment will enable Boehringer Ingelheim to cover 95% of its energy requirements at the site from renewable sources. The inauguration ceremony saw attendance from prominent figures, including German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck, and Rhineland-Palatinate Environment Minister Katrin Eder.

Michael Schmelmer, Vice Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors at Boehringer Ingelheim, highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “Part of our sustainability goals is to protect natural resources so that our earth remains a place worth living in for people and animals. With an environmentally friendly and more independent energy supply, we are ensuring stable production in order to be able to deliver medications for patients worldwide.”

Federal Minister Habeck commended the initiative, noting, “The decarbonization of all areas of our economy is necessary in order to achieve global climate targets on the one hand and a reduction in energy imports on the other. Boehringer Ingelheim is a good example of this. The company uses renewable energies for production. It trains and attracts talents as an attractive employer. Last but not least, it invests heavily in research and development, thus contributing to better healthcare and future proofing of the site.”

Biomass, considered almost CO2 neutral, is a crucial renewable energy source. The plant in Ingelheim uses waste wood from the Rhine-Main area, adhering to strict quality standards. This project is part of Boehringer Ingelheim’s broader goal of achieving CO2 neutrality by 2030. Additional measures include energy-efficient buildings, an operational solar park since 2023, and several other sites globally certified as carbon neutral.
